VASCULAR AND THROMBOSIS SYMPOSIUM

Sponsored by St. Vincent

Needs Assessment

Cardiovascular diseases account for over 50% of overall mortality in the United States, often striking individuals in the prime of their lives. The goal of this program is to provide an update on the evaluation and treatment of cardiovascular emergencies and trauma/mass casualty preparedness. Emerging pathways allows thousands of lives to be saved by putting procedures in place to evaluate, transfer and perform an angioplasty on heart attack patients within 90 minutes. Advances in Trauma Center development, imaging and incident command, improves regional trauma care. Recent reports suggest that Indiana ranks 44th in the United States for its emergency medical system. Many reports indicate that Indiana is lacking in their preparedness for mass casualty event. Trauma preparedness and mass casualty incident command has been a vital piece of Homeland Security Initiatives and is dependent on Emergency Medicine education and training. According to the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), part of the ranking is attributed to the number of certified trauma centers and certified emergency physicians. The ACEP commented that the nation's emergency care system was mediocre or worse. This report proves that there is a need for education for EMTs, Paramedics, physicians, nurses and clinicians alike. Understanding the comprehensive components of pre-hospital care, emergent care via the evaluation, treatment and management of CV disease, advances in trauma patient management, latest advances in emergent care for CV, Stroke and MI in patients and the role of the ER physicians and communication with cardiologists is key to the best patient outcomes. The symposium is to be comprised of both faculty and audience of diverse clinical background, all with an interest in management of cardiovascular diseases, using didactic lecture formats as well as group interactive panel discussions to highlight special topics, allowing audience participation and serve as a venue for case-based learning (case presentations).
